Be a good friend to your self, be realistic and be brave!

This book tells about Liz’s ( Elizabeth Gilbert ) journey seeking peacefulness after going through a two-year painful and nasty divorce process. She decided to take a year-long journey to rediscover herself. She went to Italy where she firstly wanted to learn Italian. But, then she left her Italian class and decided to learn the language directly from Italian people she met. She spent four months in Italy basically to eat and meet people. She spent another four-months in an ashram in India to pray and meditate.  The last four months were spent in Bali where she fell in love with a Brazilian man.

This is truly a wonderful book. It is like she takes me with her through her journey. It is like I laugh with her -she has a great sense of humor-  and cry when she cries.

What I like most from the book is what Richard from Texas told her about soul mate when they were in the ashram in India.
He told her: “A soul mate sometimes enters our life as someone to stir us up. To hold up the mirror so that we can see ourselves more clearly and antagonize us and make us so uncomfortable that we have to change because we can’t continue to look at the same thing because we’re looking at it clearly now. This is the reason a soul mate may not last forever. The encounter is so intense and so clarifying that we burn through those things quickly.”

And I think Yudhi is the most character I like from her book. He is Javanese who is more American than any American guy. He was born in Jakarta, is a great guitarist. He wanted to see the word so he decided to work in a cruise ship. He worked for 12 hours a day to clean up in that cruise ship. When his contract was over, he stayed in New Jersey and worked in a sandwich stall, again, for 12 hours a day. Then, he moved to New York, played his guitar with other talented musicians, met Ann, fell in love and married her. Right after 911 attacks, he -who had reported to Department of Homeland Security- ended up in a jail for weeks and was deported to Indonesia as a suspected Moslem terrorist. He is a Christian though, right after he was born.
